Peanut / Groundnuts
Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), usually known as groundnuts, are a legume crop produced primarily for their edible seeds. It is commonly cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics, and it is significant to both small and major commercial growers. It is classed as both a grain legume and an oil crop due to its high oil content. In 2016, the world’s yearly output of shelled peanuts was 44 million tonnes, with China accounting for 38% of the total. Peanut pods develop underground (geocarpy) rather than above ground, which is unusual among legume crop plants. With this in mind, scientist Carl Linnaeus gave peanuts the scientific name hypogaea, which means “beneath the soil.”
